Become an authority.

Found a great article by www.netseek.co.uk on SEO, so here goes.....in note form.

Look at Google Webmaster Guidelines.
Bad tactics - keyword spamming, excessive links on any one page, tiny invisible text, multiple cloaked pages.
- What works for the the users will work for the search engines.

Become an authority site in Google.
- content - should be intelligent and interesting, not a load of keywords.
- Site saturation - look at competitors' websites, how many pages do they have indexed, thus add more pages to your site.
- industry news - add industry news to your site. Each news items becomes a new page, thus more content.
- varied contributors - spread the job of adding content around your workforce. More authors publishing on your site makes you a bigger authority.
- Building links - get links through well written content. The more interesting, the more people will link to it.

SEO tips

Unless you have a monthly budget to throw at online marketing and optimising your website, you will have to do your SEO and SEM the DIY way!

The problem with SEO and SEM, is you either pay a third party company to do the work for you - a few hundred UK pounds a month plus, pay for a one or two shot time optimising - but this will obviously only last a short time as the SEO and SEM work is always on-going OR go the DIY route.
The DIY route means, getting the information in a straight forward and compact form to put in place as efficiently as possible. We don't have all day to tweak our sites, we all have businesses to run!

Can you update your site yourself to do the SEO? If you have a Content Management System (CMS) you can do it yourself easily, if you have a 'flat page' website, you will have to either have web building skills or pay someone regularly to do the updates. Try a CMS of some sort, it will make your life easier!!

Therefore, below are a list of resources for SEO and SEM.

As the list expands, i will format the content in a more structured manner, showing which are the most important to follow as first steps, etc.
(Caveat - as with all information on the web, look at the date of posting to see how up to date the information is, especially here!)

SEO
http://www.janklin.com/traffbld.html - A good list of 'lessons' on how to start planning and putting in place your SEO strategy. Follow the lessons, step by step and you should have a good foundation for your SEO and SEM.

http://www.sitepronews.com/ - mainly aimed at web developers, but has much information on SEO. You may have to by-pass a few add and selling articles, but the information on SEO and SEM is quality.
